Höganäs Brewery dates back to the late 1800's, but these days, production takes place in Magazine 36, where a modern brewery has been installed, where Höganäs Brewery still stands for quality, craftsmanship and passion, infused with elements of earthy, organic, authentic and modern overtones.
As we took a detailed tour of the brewery itself, and tasted some new beer experiments, I asked Lukas Östberg how they develop these interesting and individual flavours, which I suddenly found myself enjoying too many of, too quickly…
“Much of our inspiration regarding the taste of our beer comes from the US west coast, but the main drive comes from the importance of making a high quality and well-tasting beer, using carefully selected ingredients - without additives, always unpasteurised and unfiltered - for the best taste experience.”
…also a great strategy for avoiding hangovers… or at least, reducing them.
A SWEDISH BEER LAB WITH GLOBAL INFLUENCES
HIGH NOSE BREW is the more experimental part of Höganäs Brewery - an exciting beer laboratory, where they develop new beers for the more geeky beer enthusiasts. The ideas they choose often come from inspiration gathered on trips to different parts of the world. The starting point is always a healthy amount of curiosity about about the taste, flowing into the possible combinations of beer types, foods, methods, herbs and spices, from different countries and continents.
SOUTH AFRICAN WITH ENGLISH ROOTS
The history of beer brewing itself, is another source of inspiration. Similar to the Höganäs Bryggeri APA, both African Pale Ale and TWISTED TWIN DIPA have roots in the type of India Pale Ale that the English created in the 1700’s, to enable the beer to be transported to India. The recipe included a higher concentration of hops, as well as a higher alcohol content.
In the 1980’s, the Americans picked up the IPA idea, and gave it a new twist, with American hops and citrus tones. American Pale Ale (APA) was born. In the 90’s, breweries in the United States brought it a step further, and developed Dipan (double IPA) with the "extra everything".
African Pale Ale is Höganäs Brewery’s ‘Africa-inspired’ variation on the theme. A healthy, tasty and fresh beer, with slightly lower alcohol content.
NOT EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE, BUT SOMETHING FOR MOST
Höganäs Brewery pursues a strong ambition to brew beer that can be appreciated by as many beer lovers as possible. However, to think that a beer from HIGH NOSE BREW will appeal to anyone and everyone, is probably a utopia, and not something they even want to achieve.
Developing the individuality, and strong character of the beers themselves, are what Höganäs Brewery chooses to focus their energy on.
As the selection grows, and new experiments become great beers, more people will be able to find their own favourites. The Brewery are convinced that there is even a market for the more experimental and challenging beer types, so with their store as a springboard, they will inspire a broader range of people to explore outside the comfort and safety of the more mainstream beer brands.
With that in mind, the taste experiments at the Beer Lab in Höganäs continue, with more exciting beers on the way, from HIGH NOSE BREW.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF BEER MAKING HISTORY
For Lukas Östberg, the idea to breathe new life into the old Höganäs Bryggeri materialised on a warm, sunny, early autumn evening, in 2012. He quickly found a suitable production space (Magazine 36) and joined forces with Mats Hernström and Kim Bröchner, who were planning their restaurant concept GARAGE. Ideas were exchanged, and a successful development phase seemed possible, so they took the decision there and then, and got started.
By March 2013, Höganäs Brewery was in operation. Their premiere beer No.1 Höganäs Stock achieved a very good reception towards the end of the year, and Höganäs APA (the American Pale Ale) won the title of Best Ale, at Örebro Beer and Whiskey Festival. The prize meant a lot to the team, because it was the Visitors' Choice. This achievement was repeated at the same trade show in 2014, with the new African Pale Ale Hops from South Africa.
A BEER CAN BE TWO THINGS: GOOD, OR NOT GOOD
"We have a straightforward approach to beer. You don’t talk so much about why you like one or the other, the taste is individual. Either you like it, or you don’t.… but of course it’s permitted to spice up the product with love, passion and hard work, to continue a long and proud Artisan brewing tradition of Höganäs Brewers, that many know, and appreciate."
Quality and accuracy is important for Höganäs Brewery, and this is evident in the fact that they use the best raw materials available, and that the brewing process meets the highest hygiene standards.
BEER TASTING - THE ATMOSPHERE AT HÖGANÄS BREWERY
You can book a tour of the brewery, followed by some beer tasting, or even a full dining experience, at GARAGE. For those who do not feel like booking ahead, the brewery has a general "drop-in tasting" on the last Friday of every month, from 17.00, so you’re welcome to just drop by. Knowledgeable staff will guide you through the brewery, and spice it all up with the brewery's interesting history.
The tour can, of course, be supplemented with a round of beer tasting, which is vital, to better understand the process! Those who want to combine great beer with good food can be re-routed to GARAGE, where they serve what may well be Sweden's tastiest hamburger.
At the brewery, they also have a store where they sell beer and other food products, such as beer sausages, and similar. You can buy the popular Höganäs Folköl 3.5% and the Höganäs Scoville, a chilli beer brewed using chilli’s cultivated by Mr. Mark Wilcox from Chili Garage. In addition to the above, you can also buy tastings of all the current types of beer they produce.

GOOD STUFF FOR GOOD PEOPLE
Just across the yard you’ll find GARAGE BAR, where you will always hear a strong flow carefully selected oily rock, blues and boogie that you never knew you longed to hear, seeping out of the old Cerwin-Vegor jukebox.
After the kitchen closes at 21:30, they generate a party atmosphere in the bar until 02:00, with live music and other events, in a social club where everyone feels welcome!
NOTHING LESS THAN JUNK FOOD ROYAL
The kitchen is influenced by the American South and Mexico. Hamburgers, Chili and Buffalo Wings, all cooked from ingredients of the highest quality, so it tastes like it did, when you were out on the road. Along with this, you have a good selection of beers from Höganäs Brewery, good wines for reasonable prices, and a formidable assortment of Tequila, Bourbon and Rum, to go with the food...
“The only way to get rid of temptation,
is to yield to it”
- Oscar Wilde.
This is how it started for Mats Hernström and Kim Bröchner - the love of motors, motorcycles, food, beer, and music at grill temperature. Gathering all of this together, they opened GARAGE on Saturday, the thirteenth of April, 2013, and since then, not a day goes by, where they don’t think about how to make it even better.
